Birmingham Stallions Week 2 Roster Updates: Free Agent Signings, Injury Report

Ahead of their Week 2 matchup vs the Houston Gamblers, the Stallions made a series of roster moves to buff up their depth chart. With 46-man rosters in the USFL, coaches have to make every move on the back end count.

The addition of Montell Cozart is an interesting move, and though he wasn’t a full-time starter at Kansas or Boise State, he improved thoughout his college career and flashed quality talent. His senior campaign in blue & orange, he played in relief of current Denver Bronco Brett Rypien, and passed for 754 Yards, 10 TD’s and just 1 pick, with another 361 Yards and 4 TD’s on the ground. That was back in 2017, and Cozart spent 2018-2020 with the Calgary Stampeders, where he won a Grey Cup as one of Bo Levi Mitchell’s reserves.

After a couple of years out of football, Cozart was working at a car dealership when he got the call from Birmingham. Boise State has a well-documented history of producing good football minds under center like Kellen Moore and Rypien, and Cozart is well-regarded by the Boise media. I think he’s a good option to be J’Mar Smith’s QB2 as Alex McGough nurses his ankle on the inactive roster.

The release of Manasseh Bailey comes as a surprise to me, and I liked his size/speed combo out of the draft. However, this correlates with their promotion of Peyton Ramzy out of Tuskeegee.

The promotions of DB Lorenzo Burns and OL O’Shea Duggs to the active roster also correlates with the injury status of Josh Shaw and Matthew Snow. I expect a lot of movement from inactive > active each week as teams try to field their healthiest players on the 46.

Nothing world-changing on the waiver wire this week, but Birmingham did well to shuffle things up and reinforce the back ends of the depth chart.

Curious to see what the QB situation is moving forward. Will Cozart receive reps due to his diversity and athleticism or his he simply filling a spot till McGough comes back
