Former New Jersey Generals QB Ben Holmes Is A CFL Grey Cup Champion

While the Argos and their Quarterbacks McLeod Bethel Thompson and Chad Kelly will get the majority of press coverage, it is noteworthy to mention about the Toronto Argonauts designated clipboard holder Ben Holmes. Holmes who famously had a cameo on United by Football, the “Hard Knocks” version of the USFL, was released from the team in favor of current Vegas Vipers Quarterback and Alt-League fixture Luis Perez.

While the path to the Grey Cup is less than linear for the current Argonaut has been traveling all around the CFL as an emergency quarterback. Upon his departure from the Generals, Holmes has seen himself be a part of the Alouettes, and the Elks, before finding his way to Toronto for the final leg of the CFL season.

The Argos who had seen the sudden retirement of Austin Simmons, ultimately decided to stick with Holmes over the touted Arizona product Khalil Tate, after Tate was signed in July of 2022. Holmes the D-II alum has managed to stick around in the CFL despite, a less stellar showing in the 2021 Spring League, and quick exit for the New Jersey Generals.

While Holmes may be able to stick around in the CFL, one can ask the question what’s next for the former General. With rumors of MBT possibly retiring and the emergence of Chad Kelly during the 109th Grey Cup, is it out of the realm of possibility for Holmes to make a return down south? With opportunity a plenty in the United States, if Holmes wants a chance to start and actually see the field it may be more likely that Holmes could return to the USFL if a starting opportunity presents itself down south. Regardless, despite a less than linear path, today Holmes is a Grey Cup champion and officially part of football history.

As much as I root for Ben Holmes, I would still rather see Chad Kelly coming to the USFL and becoming a Gamblers star like his uncle. Best thing about football is that it’s a game of opportunities. Of course until the shelf life is exhausted.

I googled Chad Kelly contract status. It seems the Argos were smart enough to sign him for two years so he will be in Toronto in 2023. Did you say Ben Holmes was available. How is that toe? we
