Maulers Offensive Struggles Continue in 20-3 Loss to Generals

The Pittsburgh Maulers just can’t seem to figure it out on offense this year. After a poor outing on the road against the New Orleans Breakers last weekend, the Maulers opened up shop in Canton, Ohio for the first time. Making their home debut versus the New Jersey Generals.

It was a defensive chess match to begin the game, with both teams making huge red zone stands in the first half. Big-time sacks and physical tackles kept the game at 3-3 going into halftime, but as the rain poured, the Maulers offense just couldn’t get right.

The game would see its first touchdown from Generals running back Cam Echols-Luper on a screen pass that he took the distance. Darius Vicker a quarter later would score a touchdown of his own, the game’s last set of points. 20-3 was your final score from Canton, as the Maulers drop to 0-2 on the season.

Turnovers, miscues, and just sloppy play again for Pittsburgh on the offensive side. Both James Morgan and Troy Williams saw playing time, and this time Williams was the one to look better. Finishing the day 11/16 for 70 yards. Morgan by comparison went 8/14 for 54 yards with a pick and a fumble on his stat line. The Maulers also failed to establish a run game, handing off to running back Madre London 10 times for a total of 38 yards.

The defense wasn’t flashy, with no picks or sacks in the game, but they did enough to give the offense a chance to win. Unfortunately, the group just doesn’t seem capable of making good of the opportunity. We’ll see if any changes happen to lead us into next week’s matchup at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan as they take on the Philadelphia Stars. But an 0-2 hole is extremely hard to dig yourself out of, especially in a ten-game season.

When did it become a 9 game season? I thought it was 10.
