Memphis Showboats Continue to Trim Roster, Cut Two More Players

Five Days after cutting Seven Players, followed by Jordan Ta’amu officially leaving the team, the Showboats continued to trim down the roster. On January 7th, the Showboats released two role players DL Austrian Robinson and Running Back Juwan Washington. The Showboats roster now sits at 61 after the first week of January.

Washington was the team’s second leading rusher in 2022 behind Jordan Ta’amu. The San Diego State Alumni, split carries with former teammate BJ Emmons in a three headed rushing attack, that totaled 808 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Washington himself rushed for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding 70 yards through the air. On January 5th, Washington confirmed that he’d be moving on the next opportunity.

The Showboats also released Austrian Robinson a former Ole Miss Rebel. Robinson was a rotational defensive lineman for the “Bandits”/Showboats last year totaling 14 tackles and 2 sacks. Originally drafted in the USFL Supplemental Draft in the 9th round Robinson has also spent time with the Carolina Panthers and CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.

To combat the release of Washington and Robinson the Showboats have signed six defensive linemen, and three running backs. Going into 2023 it appears on offense the Showboats will sport a new Quarterback and a brand-new trio of running backs as the team returns zero returning rushers for 2023.

In addition to running backs, the six new defensive linemen also figure to play a big role in 2023, as the Showboats have plenty of new faces with only a hand full of veterans returning. With plenty of new faces Head Coach Todd Haley has plenty of work to do, in an effort to improve on a disappointing 2022 4-6 season.

In all honesty both BJ Emmons and Juwan Washington appeared to have a lot more potential then they actually displayed, almost whatever could go wrong, did. Too many dropped passes out of the backfield. and the O-line seemed to get hurt right from the start. I think Juwan has some talent and will hopefully get another opportunity.
