USFL Week in Review: Five Former Players Active This Week, Domenique Davis Makes NFL Debut

USFL players continue to make in Week 8 with one even making their debut this season. KaVontae Turpin, Maurice Alexander, Tae Hayes, Mitch Fraboni, and new-comer Domenique Davis all were active this week and all saw game reps this week. Domenique Davis, the former Houston Gambler Defensive Tackle was the 7th USFL player to appear in an NFL game this season, as he debuted for the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.

USFL Player Recap:

KaVontae Turpin continued to impress this week in the return game and earned more snaps on the offensive side of the ball. Turpin has continued to receive approx. 5-8 snaps per game on Offense while being the main specialist for punts and kicks this year. The former MVP recorded one rushing attempt for eleven yards, while also totaling three returns for thirty-six yards. So far Turpin has totaled 426 All-Purpose Yards through 8 weeks and could reach the 1000-yard milestone with nine games left in the season. Turpin is continuing to make the case of being the NFL’s premier returner.

Maurice Alexander was a last second addition to the Lions Practice Squad. Alexander the former All-USFL Return man, has continued to be on the transaction forum for the Lions as he’s been back and forth between the Practice Squad and Active Roster, recorded his first career reception for seven yards, in addition to adding 17 yards on a kick return. Since week 4, Alexander has been the Lions main returner for kicks.

Tae Hayes is the most recent USFL player to be signed to an active roster. Hayes is mostly being used as a reserve defensive back but did manage to play some defense along with his daily dose of special teams action. Hayes did not record any statistics this week, but is now officially a member of the Panthers 53-man roster.

Mitch Fraboni continues to impress as the Broncos long-snapper, due to the injury to Jacob Bobenmeyer. Fraboni, has yet to record a “bad snap” and recorded two tackles in London, against the Jags in week 8. With the high turnover of specialist in the NFL, Fraboni is making his case to remain apart of the NFL with not only the Broncos, but the other 31 teams. Fraboni has record 3 tackles so far this NFL season in three games.

As stated, Domenique Davis, had made his NFL debut for the Bengals on Monday night. The 26-Year-old rookie, played in 19 defensive snaps, in addition to one special teams snap, and recorded two tackles during week 8. Davis an underrated cog in a special Gamblers defense record 54 tackles and 4 sacks during the 2022 USFL season. Davis who is still on the practice squad, made his case to be a “go-to” guy for the Bengals in the upcoming weeks as injuries continue to plague NFL teams through the rest of the season.

With seven players to appear in a game (Taylor Bertolet, and Micah Abernathy being the other two players), the USFL continues to make a presence in the NFL. As the season continues to progress, it appears that more USFL players will continue to garner an opportunity for the 2022 season. With more players like Victor Bolden continuing work out for teams it does appears that the USFL footprint will continue to grow, going into the Season 2 of the USFL. Regardless, for a league that seemed to be put together hastily, the completion of a season and seven players making their 2022 debuts can definitely be defined as a success for the league as an avenue of talent for players looking to make their name in professional football.
