Chargers Release Stallions CB Matt Hankins from Practice Squad

The Birmingham Stallions put together one of the most impressive runs in providing opportunities for fringe NFL players to pursue their dreams. Matt Hankins out of Iowa was no exception as a late season signing for Skip Holtz and his championship team. However, on December 7th Hankins was released from his practice squad contract as the Chargers signed WR Simi Fehoko to replace him.

Hankins was signed with the Stallions on June 5th and would appear in Two games for Birmingham. He’d Two tackles along with returning a Kenji Bahar fumble for a Touchdown against the Gamblers. Hankins would get signed by the Los Angeles Chargers in the middle August earning a spot on the practice squad for LA, before his eventual release.

Hankins was one of 16 players to earn NFL contracts from the Birmingham Stallions a figure many say is the most in the modern Spring League era passing the San Antonio Commanders of the AAF. While Hankins is now a “free agent” with the volatility of NFL practice Squad’s the Iowa alum may find his back in the NFL sooner rather than later.
