During todays FOX Q3 earnings call, CEO Lachlan Murdoch talk a bit about the success of the USFL so far and road ahead. When compared to other sports leagues with sizable media right deals, The United States Football League is doing well.
USFL EVP Edward Hartman posted the following quotes from todays call.
“FOX Corporation Executive Chairman Lachlan Murdoch on today’s Q3 earnings call: “Through its first three weeks, nearly 20M people watched the @USFL on TV and games on FOX and NBC are averaging 1.5M viewers…
That compares favorably to well-established spring sports properties like the NHL, F1, the EPL and MLS, all properties which either recently earned sizable rights increases or expected to do so soon. We are clearly establishing that @USFL belongs in this competitive set”
The USFL is heading into week 5, which is same as amount of games the XFL played. The AAF made it to 8 games. It certainly seems all system are go for this season to complete with the Championship game in Canton Ohio on July 3rd. Making it to season two has been the real question. Everyone at FOX seems happy so far.
“So have you heard today’s big Fox football news? Week 4 USFL games on Fox & NBC grew by +12% over Week 3 broadcast games. 1.1 mill vs 985k.”
The main driver for this league in FOX eyes is ratings. As long as they can maintain this level, we should see a season two in 2023. Something the XFL and AAF never did, let alone finish a season. Great news for Spring Football fans.
