On Wednesday, the New Orleans Breakers added former Birmingham Stallions tight end Sage Surratt to their active roster.
The Breakers’ new regime, led by general manager Ryan Jones and head coach John DeFilippo, continues to make moves and shape their roster in the buildup to the 2023 season. With roughly 8 weeks until kickoff, expect many more moves ahead.

After a redshirt year in 2017, Sage Surratt played 2 seasons at Wake Forest University. In that time, Surratt appeared in 22 games (18 starts) and totaled 107 receptions for 1,582 yards, and 15 touchdowns. He considered leaving school and entering the 2020 NFL Draft during his redshirt junior season, but he decided to return to the program for another year. However, ahead of the season kicking off, Surratt opted out of the 2020 college football season.
In 2021, Surratt signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent. He’d spend some time on the practice squad before getting released in September 2021.
Following his time in Detroit, Surratt was drafted by the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions for their 2022 season. The team went on to win the 2022 USFL Championship, but Surratt found himself bouncing on and off the team’s practice squad throughout the year. Surratt managed to rack up 11 receptions for 148 yards in his limited playing time.
Most recently, Surratt spent some time with the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of the 2022 NFL Season. However, he was injured before the season started and spent most of the year on injured reserve before eventually getting released.
