The Philadelphia Stars have methodically gone about re-signing their impending free agents this offseason. This included Adam Rodriguez, Jordan Suell, Luis Aguilar, and Jacob Burton. Meanwhile Gabriel Sewell sat back and watched as several of his teammates re-signed just wondering when his time would come.
The wait is over. The Philadelphia Stars have re-signed Sewell for the 2024 season his third with the Stars and the USFL. Sewell has been a steady contributor for the Stars since 2022, and he will look to continue contributing to his team in 2024 and beyond. Amidst the XFL/USFL merger the players seem to be trying to retain some sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic offseason. Teams to their credit are operating like it’s business as usual.
Sewell’s impact for the Stars doesn’t always appear on a stat sheet, but at times he has caused big time plays that led directly to wins. Such as his forced fumble in week 8 of the 2022 season. Over his first two years with the USFL he has racked up 80.5 tackles, and .5 sacks.
Underrated, Not Under Appreciated For the Stars
Sewell is a productive player despite not being the height/weight/speed candidate teams look for at linebacker these days. His height (5’11) has stood against him in his pursuit of an NFL contract, but the Stars have benefited from this situation. Many guys on this roster are borderline NFL talents but don’t have the ideal size, or athletic attributes of an average NFL player. This is part of why we didn’t see many Stars players sign NFL contracts. The Stars have done an amazing job of identifying these type of players to build this roster.
He has developed close bonds with his teammates and they seem to have cultivated a family like atmosphere in Philadelphia where the players would rather stay than test free agency. With Sewell signed I anticipate they turn their attention to the secondary to lock up some of their key players. Congratulations to Gabriel Sewell.
