80 Players to Join Inaugural Draft Class Starting Tonight at 7 pm ET

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 10, 2022 – The new United States Football League (USFL) will conduct its 10-round Supplemental Player Draft tonight starting at 7 pm ET. The USFL will add 80 players to its inaugural draft class, and the League will provide real-time coverage through its social media channels.

“Just as we did in February for the initial phase of the first-ever USFL Player Draft, we’ll use a unique analytic modified snake system that’s equitable for our eight teams,” said Jim Popp, USFL Director of Player Administration. “The main difference between previous rounds and tonight’s Supplemental Draft is that rather than select players by position, teams can select any player that helps complete their 45-man roster.”

Another difference from previous USFL Draft rounds is that teams will not be allowed to pass on a pick. Teams will have two minutes between selections during the Supplemental Draft. Should a team let its time expire in any round without selecting, it can still choose a player, but it risks letting the team on the clock take the player it was considering. There will be a five-minute break at the conclusion of each round, and trades between teams are not permitted.

USFL teams are drafting from a pool of 550-600 players who have already signed contracts to play in the League. Only players who have signed contracts are eligible for selection. Drafted players will report on March 22 to training camps in Birmingham. At the conclusion of training camps, each team will have 45 players, for a League total of 360 players. Once the season begins on April 16, each team’s active roster will have 38 players plus a seven-man practice squad.

About the USFL

The United States Football League (USFL) is a new, independent football league that is not affiliated with the defunct 1980s league or its owners. The inaugural USFL season will kick off April 16 with eight teams split into two divisions: the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers, and Tampa Bay Bandits in the South Division; and the Michigan Panthers, Pittsburgh Maulers, New Jersey Generals, and Philadelphia Stars in the North Division. Each team will play a 10-game regular-season schedule, followed by semifinals on June 25 between the top two teams in each division and a championship game on July 3 between division winners. The USFL will complete its inaugural Player Draft with a supplemental round on March 10. Players will report to training camps on March 22. At the conclusion of training camps, each USFL team will carry a 38-man active roster plus a seven-man practice squad.
