Stallions’ Futbol Convert Brandon Aubrey is a Bonafide Football Player

Birmingham took a swing at kicker in the USFL Draft, selecting former MLS Defender and Notre Dame soccer standout Brandon Aubrey. Though he had experience as a pro athlete, he’d only just made the jump to football, and the USFL is his first opportunity on the gridiron. His big leg and training with longtime NFL kicker John Carney made him an attractive prospect, and the gamble appears to be paying off early.

In last week’s game, he not only went 2/2 FG and 3/3 on XP for 9 points in the 33-28 win, he also proved his mettle as a football guy. He absolutely lit up the Gamblers’ Isaiah Zuber on a kick return. Keep in mind this is likely his first hit in the game of football. Guy’s a natural.

Love to see that kind of last-line effort from a kicker in coverage, and the Stallions coaches have to be fired up about Aubrey’s performance in the first two weeks. In a league that’s been plagued by poor kicking performances, Aubrey is unaffected. In fact, he’s Mr. Perfect two weeks in. 2/2 FG and 7/7 XP in his first ever live football action.

This special teams unit as a whole is performing well, as Colby Wadman is nailing punts inside 20, Victor Bolden Jr. leads the league with 279 Kick Return Yards, and they’re winning this phase of the game for the Stallions. Can’t wait to see what’s to come this weekend.

I think we’re seeing a special teams ace being born right before our eyes. This is what spring football is all about.
