USFL Star Austin Watkins Jr. Bolsters Cleveland Browns’ Wide Receiver Roster

The Cleveland Browns are locking onto their wide receiver targets. After working out 11 players, the team is reported to sign the 2023 USFL Championship winner and wide receiver Austin Watkins Jr.

Watkins, a former UAB standout, carved a niche for himself in college football with a total of 1,642 receiving yards over three seasons. His sophomore year saw him rack up 1,092 receiving yards and six touchdowns, catching the eye of the San Francisco 49ers, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2021.

Despite being waived later by the 49ers, Watkins returned to the team’s practice squad for a brief period. After some time with Tampa Bay during the 2022 offseason, he showcased his skills in the USFL playing for the Birmingham Stallions. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound receiver recorded 197 receiving yards and a touchdown during his stint in the league.

Watkins’ addition to the Browns’ squad marks an exciting phase for the team’s offensive lineup. His signing brings the number of wide receivers on the 90-man roster to 14, amplifying the depth and competition in the unit. The long-framed 25-year-old receiver is expected to make a significant impact as the Browns begin their training camp in West Virginia tomorrow.

The Browns made the signing official on Saturday, with Watkins set to don the No. 80 jersey for his first official NFL season. His USFL performance demonstrates the potential he brings to the Browns, and it will be interesting to see how he integrates into the team’s tactics.

With this latest addition, the Browns continue to strategically invest in talent that strengthens their offense. While Watkins’ NFL career is just taking off, his proven record in the USFL gives fans reason to anticipate his contributions on the field. Stay tuned for updates as the Browns’ training camp unfolds.
