USFL Star-Studded Talent Lighting up the NFL Pre-Season

The USFL season ended on July 3rd, 2022, with the Birmingham Stallions securing the 2022 USFL Championship. It was unknown what the NFL would do with all the fantastic talent we just saw during the 2022 season.

NFL signs 51 total players as of August 14th, 2022

The NFL and fellow teams were all about swooping up USFL players who were in prime format and, unlike most players coming into the NFL, didn’t play an entire season a month before the NFL preseason began. Only 27 of the 51 remain on NFL rosters after the second week of cuts. It has been quite the journey for many of these players that have proved there is a need and reason for spring football in America.

KaVontae Turpin is continuing his star-studded USFL Season with the Dallas Cowboys.

On July 29th, 2022, the Dallas Cowboys announced that they signed USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin to a three-year contract after having 44 receptions, 540 receiving yards, and 6 touchdowns with the New Jersey Generals. Turpin stated to the media that he wants to prove to everyone that he belongs in the pros and that he still has a lot left in the tank at age 26.

KaVontae didn’t take long to get the jets started in just the second game of the Dallas Cowboys preseason, this past Sunday, when the Dallas Cowboys took their talents to Los Angeles to play the LA Chargers. Nearly nine minutes into the game, Turpin returned a 98-yard kickoff return to score the first six points of the game for the Cowboys. But he wasn’t done. In the 2nd Quarter, with only a minute remaining in the half, the Chargers punted the ball, and Turpin showed his skills are unmatched as he would end up scoring a 72-yard punt return for another six points to add to the Cowboy’s lead in which they would end up beating the Chargers 32 to 18.

While looking like he is in mid-season form, just like most of the other USFL season players, they have the opportunity to have a leg up in the competition heading into the weekly cuts going into the 2022 NFL season that kicks off on September 8th, 2022.

Maurice Alexander shines, takes his talents from the Philadelphia Stars to Detroit with the Lions, and impresses the coaching staff.

KaVontae Turpin isn’t the only USFL player making a name for themselves in the NFL during the 2022 NFL Pre Season. Halfway across the country in Indianapolis, Indiana, former Philadelphia Stars Maurice Alexander was showing off his kickoff skills by returning a 61-yard kickoff before being knocked out of bounds. He would return it for another 45 yards on the following kickoff before being knocked out of bounds. In the game, Alexander would record four kickoff returns for a total of 156 yards, with an average of 38 yards per return, assisting his team to victory 27-26 over the Colts. Alexander is another USFL player that made a name for himself this spring/summer, being selected to the All-USFL Team for his performances on offense and special teams. Alexander made a great impression on Lion’s coaching staff going into the season, trying to earn that 53-man roster spot.

Turpin and Alexander are just a couple of names out of all the fantastic talent that did something unique in week two of the NFL preseason, arguing why they deserve a roster spot in the NFL when the season starts. Pittsburgh Mauler’s kicker Ramiz Ahmed was perfect in Green Bay, with the Packers going 2/2 on FGs, 45 long, and scoring 8 total points in the game. In the very same game, Micah Abernathy got an interception on the New Orleans Saints late into the 2nd Quarter of the game.

Former USFL Champion and Birmingham Stallions stand-out Tae Hayes takes a pick-six to the house against the Patriots.

USFL Champion and former Birmingham Stallions Tae Hayes showed off his defensive skills again the New England Patriots when he would get a pick-six with the Carolina Panthers. So many stand-out plays and stand-out players are showing why the USFL worked in the 2022 season and have taken down critiques that the USFL schedule doesn’t work very well, and it ends too late for NFL training camp, which is straightforward and has proven to be incorrect.
