This matchup is going to be electric. The Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers are both 2-0 heading into week 3, and both teams are riding high on fantastic early performances by their quarterbacks. I’d argue that J’Mar Smith and Kyle Sloter are two of the top 3 passers in this league so far, and I can’t wait to see them go head to head.
The Stallions will again have home field advantage, regardless of who’s wearing the white jerseys. J’Mar will look to build on his early success, but it’s appearing already that he’s cemented as one of the top QB’s in this league. His meteoric rise has come surrounded by a strong supporting cast. Birmingham’s line surrendered just one sack this season, and the clean pockets he’s been able to work out of have made a huge impact.
The weapons on this offense are formidable as well, as CJ Marable and Osirus Mitchell lead the USFL in rushing and receiving TD’s respectively. Brandon Aubrey leads the league in Kicking, Victor Bolden leads in return yards. Lorenzo Burns leads in interceptions. I like the aggressive defense we’ve seen so far, and their ability to come up big in big moments has been key. Special teams has been killing it as well.
The Breakers ground out a gritty win in week one, and then proceeded to absolutely light it up last week in a 34-3 blowout win. As a Broncos fan, Kyle Sloter signified my long hopes at QB for a couple years there in the dark ages, and its been great to see him get a real shot to play. He’s done a great job spreading the ball out to his receivers, and when this offense turns it on, its scary. The Breakers also have a great 1-2 punch in Jordan Ellis and TJ Logan.
Their D absolutely throttled Jordan Ta’amu and the Bandits last week, giving up just 3 points while notching 4 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 2 picks and 6 passes defensed. With a stifling performance like that under their belt, they’ll hope to bring that momentum into this one.
