Birmingham Stallions Beat New Orleans Breakers 47-22, Look To Repeat As USFL Champions

The Birmingham Stallions left a mark on the 2023 United States Football League (USFL) season with a stellar record of 8-2 during the regular season. The team further consolidated their position as the league’s best by trouncing the New Orleans Breakers in a resounding 47-22 victory. The Stallions are now set to square off against the Pittsburgh Maulers at the USFL Championship Game on Saturday, aiming for their second straight league title.

A Dominant Performance

The Stallions’ triumph over the Breakers in the South Division title game was an exhibition of ruthless efficiency. From the first whistle, the Stallions were in control, scoring on their first seven possessions, culminating in a commanding 40-7 lead before Ricky Person Jr. lost a fumble late in the third quarter.

Alex McGough, the Stallions’ quarterback, showcased his elite talent, throwing for 310 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, while also rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Davion Davis was McGough’s main target, catching five passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Contributions also came from tight end Jace Sternberger and wide receiver Josh Johnson, who both caught touchdown passes.

McGough: The Stallions’ Driving Force

As one of the league’s best passers, Stallions quarterback Alex McGough has been instrumental in the team’s success. His consistent performances, leading the USFL in completion percentage (67.4%), passing touchdowns (20), and passer rating (108.3), were crucial in the Stallions’ dominant display this season.

In the South Division title game, McGough not only outshone the Breakers’ quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson but set the tone for the game with an interception off Stallions cornerback Brian Allen in the opening drive. Throughout the match, his synergy with tight end Jace Sternberger was clear, and their connection was a significant factor in the Stallions’ victory.

Birmingham’s Second Successive Title in Sight

Having vanquished the Philadelphia Stars 33-30 in last season’s USFL Championship Game, the Stallions are now gunning for their second consecutive league title. Despite their superior regular-season record, the Pittsburgh Maulers, with a 4-6 regular-season record, reached the title contest by beating the Michigan Panthers 31-27 in overtime. It promises to be a thrilling match, with the Stallions seeking to cap off a remarkable season with another championship win.

A Showdown Between the USFL’s Best

The Birmingham Stallions and the New Orleans Breakers were not only the winningest teams this season but also the two highest-scoring teams, making the South Division title game a battle of the heavyweights. However, it was the Stallions who proved superior, as their impressive offense led by Alex McGough managed to keep the Breakers at bay.

With their victory over the Breakers, the Stallions continue their quest for a second consecutive championship, heading to Canton, Ohio to meet the Pittsburgh Maulers. The Stallions will certainly be the team to watch in the coming championship game. If their current form is anything to go by, the Maulers will have to dig deep to beat the Stallions, who are on course to cement their status as the dominant force in the USFL.
