Former Bandits Running Back, BJ Emmons cut by CFL’s Roughriders.

BJ Emmons is once again without a team. The first USFL player to transition to the CFL was released from the Saskatchewan Roughriders after spending 24 days with the team. Emmons who despite being a 2021 UDFA, has already been on six teams over the three leagues.

Emmons was originally brought in to supplement an oft injured running back room that consisted of Frankie Hickson (wrist), Jamal Morrow (hand), Shaun Wilson (groin) and Kienan LaFrance (knee), however managed to not appear in any games with the Roughriders during his short CFL tenure. The Riders who are 6-11 go into the CFL’s week 21 playing the Calgary Stampeders for their season finale, who have already clinched a playoff berth. While LaFrance remains on the injury report, it appears Shaq Cooper and Jamal Morrow will shoulder the load for the Roughriders for the final week of the CFL season.

For Emmons it appears that he now goes into the winter of 2022 with some unknowns. The possibility of the USFL and XFL are always on the table especially for a player like Emmons who seems to be still relevant in professional football circles. The XFL does have their player draft approx. on Nov. 16-17th and I’m sure the Bandits could bring back Emmons to join Todd Haley’s offense for 2023. So far Devin Gray is the only USFL player to leave the NFL and sign back with his USFL original team.

For Emmons it does appear his football career is far from over. The former FAU running back is still young and relevant enough to continue to earn a living at the professional level. With Alt-Football Leagues at the highest peak it’s been in for a long time, Emmons has plenty of opportunity to prove he belongs in a league, whether it be the XFL, NFL, USFL or CFL.
