Off-Season in Review: Birmingham Stallions Add Veteran Safety T.J. Green

The Birmingham Stallions were quick to snag an XFL draftee by picking up T.J. Green on December 16th. Green joins the Stallions after being drafted by the Arlington Renegades in the 10th round of the XFL’s November draft.

Bringing in a Seasoned Pro:

The Stallions choice to bring in Green seemed to be a pretty easy one. Green was a 2nd round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, by the Colts. In his NFL career Green has been with Six NFL teams, including a quick stint with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders on their practice squad for about a month. Green has appeared in 41 NFL games, recording 103 tackles, earning $4,485,601 throughout his career.

Who is Coming Back:

The Stallions are set to return Safeties Malik Grant, Christian McFarland, Tyree Robinson, and Jojo Tillery. Grant spent the majority of the year on the Stallions inactive roster after being picked up on May 20th while McFarland, Robinson, and Tillery all totaled over 40 tackles with Tillery earning a Defensive Player of the Week Honors in Week 6. The Stallions defensive backfield looks to be led by Tillery for a second consecutive week season, with T.J. Green looking to make his mark on the team, in his 1st season in the USFL.

Closing Thoughts:

With Green joining USFL veterans McFarland, Robinson and Tillery, the Stallions Defensive Backfield is one of the more experienced units in the league. With the experience of McFarland and Robinson most likely backing up Green and Tillery, the Stallions showcase an outrageous amount of depth at the Safety position going into 2023. With the losses of Doug Costin, Terrill Hanks, and Aaron Adeoye to the XFL, coupled with the losses of DeMarquis Gates and Tae Hayes to the NFL, strengthening the Safety position to assist a “young” front Seven was key in this defense. With two playmaking Safeties now on the field the Stallions are in prime position to make up for the losses of NFL caliber players.
