After leaving a countless number of points on the field, the Michigan Panthers have finally signed a Kicker. Cole Murphy, who was a 2018 UDFA out of Syracuse is now joining the Michigan Panthers for his first opportunity since the AAF.
Murphy’s addition comes at the expense of Michael Carrizosa who despite his success as a punter was released due to his inability to successfully convert extra points and field goals. Murphy’s signing however does not alleviate the burden of possible special teams mishaps as the recently signed kicker has never actually punted in a college or professional setting.
Murphy wasn’t the only transaction for the Panthers on Tuesday, WR Jeff Badet and DE Chase DeMoor were both released and replaced by WR Ishmael Hyman and DE Vantrel McMillan. Badet who was supposed to be a major offensive contributor, was limited by a hamstring injury following the Panthers Week 1 loss against the Gamblers and hasn’t played since week 1.
Badet who is an XFL/NFL Veteran now leaves the USFL as a potential target for the upcoming XFL showcases if he can get healthy in time.
Also, released was DE Chase DeMoor, who repeatedly saw less and less playing time throughout the first four weeks. DeMoor who was a 4th rd pick in the USFL Draft, was more known for his Tik Toks and fight with teammate Cavon Walker than his play on the field. Extremely athletic, DeMoor may get another chance in the USFL or XFL, but is extremely raw and is not seen as NFL-ready what so ever.
With Ishmael Hyman and Vantrel McMillan the Panthers are receiving two players with professional experience, and most importantly players who are healthy and able to contribute. Hyman an AAF/NFL vet comes in able to supplement a wounded and underwhelming receiving corps. McMillian a CFL/XFL vet will be able to contribute immediately to a Panthers pass rush that is anemic at best.
Overall, it is clear to say the Panthers got better and healthier with this recent barrage of transactions. With the USFL rosters extremely limited the Panthers had to make some tough choices in an effort to maximize the talent they have on their roster. With the recent additions of Hyman, McMillan, and Murphy the Panthers now can boast a team at full strength for the remainder of the season where the last six games are extremely crucial in seeing if the Panthers can make a playoff spot.
