With One week left in the USFL season, the Michigan Panthers made another transaction, in hopes of helping their team strengthen the roster for the final week of the season. The team brought in former Texas A&M Defensive Lineman Tyree Johnson officially via their twitter while removing Defensive Lineman Tre Williams from the Fox Sports website. The corresponding move has yet to be announced yet by the team.
Tyree Johnson comes to Michigan after spending his college career at Texas A&M, spending Four seasons with the Aggies. Johnson would earn 2nd-team All-SEC honors in 2021 and totaled 100 tackles, and 18 sacks, in his college career. After going undrafted in 2022, Johnson spent training part of training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being released in August. Johnson would sign with the Toronto Argonauts in January however per the CFL’s roster transactions page was “deleted from the active roster” June 3rd.
In a corresponding move, the Panthers released Defensive Lineman Tre Williams per Fox Sports website and later confirmed Tuesday Night. Williams was a late addition to the Panthers 2022 squad, before becoming a rotational piece with the 2023 team. In seven games Williams totaled 10 tackles and 1 sack before being released.
With one game left that has major post season implications, the Panthers who face the Stars, will need a big effort from their stellar Defensive Line in order to keep the pressure on Philadelphia. With the Stars having a “weak” Offensive Line, the addition of another “fresh” Defensive Lineman could signify that Michigan is doing what they can to maximize their strengths, against the Stars weakest position group. With Michigan set to return to Ford Field this weekend, the addition of Johnson could provide some much-needed reinforcement, as the Panthers leave it all on the field against the Stars for essentially an early playoff game.
