Michigan Panthers October Signings Recap: Who Will Step Up in 2024?

While the Michigan Panthers have been pretty quiet over the past two weeks, October exploded with several new faces that while dawn the Royal Plum in 2024. The Panthers made plenty of transactions including signing Five players while releasing TE Kyle Markway in preparation of an impending merger.

To recap the Panthers have signed familiar faces like Special Teams standout Marcus Simms, along with 2022 Panther T.J. Carter after his stint with the LA Rams. Michigan also signed newcomers DT D’Anthony Jones, WR Garett Maeg, and LB Javin White, to supplement the team for another playoff push in 2024.

While Panthers fans know what to expect from Simms and Carter, there is a bit of a wild card with Jones, Maeg, and White. LB Javin White looks to fill the role left by Terry Myrick who remains unsigned going into the 2024 season. White coming out of UNLV has dealt with injuries since 2021, bouncing around injured reserve, and NFL practice squads during his career. White has appeared in 6 NFL games recording 4 Tackles.

Michigan also appeared to bolster their Receiving Corps due to the loss of Trey Quinn, Joe Walker, Kaden Davis, and D.J. Montgomery with North Dakota Alum Garrett Maag. After spending 2023 with the Vikings in training camp, Maag is a prime candidate for Alt-Football as the FCS product should find a home in Michigan in desperate need of a playmaker at wide out. Joining Maag was D’Anthony Jones out of Houston. Jones served as Ed Oliver’s replacement enroute to an NFL opportunity with the Bears. Jones would be waived in August like Maag. Jones is primed to replace Ethan Westbrooks on the Defensive Line who signed with the New Jersey Generals.

Currently the Panthers roster 49 Players on their roster going into the middle of November. With merger talks ongoing it does appear that the USFL rosters for camp will remain “slim” for the immediate future to ensure survivability of the league. Last season the Panthers went 4-6 enroute to playoff berth for in the 2nd season (5th overall) since the leagues return.
