As the United States Football League (USFL) approaches the conclusion of its second season with the upcoming Championship Game, the league recognized two of its most outstanding players on June 28, 2023. Houston Gamblers’ running back Mark Thompson and Michigan Panthers’ linebacker Frank Ginda have been declared the 2023 USFL Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.
Both players, who led the All-USFL Team announced last week, have made substantial impacts on their teams and dominated the season with record-setting performances.
“Several USFL players delivered commendable performances this season, but Mark Thompson and Frank Ginda distinguished themselves through their consistent play and the significant impact they had on their teams,” commented Daryl Johnston, President of Football Operations. “Thompson’s dynamic offensive capabilities and Ginda’s tenacious defense have significantly contributed to their teams’ successes, marking truly incredible seasons for both players.”
Thompson, a former Florida Gator, displayed a unique blend of power and agility that resulted in a modern USFL record of 14 rushing touchdowns. Despite the spring professional football season only comprising ten games, Thompson still managed to outshine his predecessors from the 1980s USFL who had an 18-game season. In addition to his touchdown prowess, Thompson amassed 653 rushing yards and 90 receiving yards during his second season with the Gamblers.
Equally impressive, Ginda, a former standout from San Jose State, exhibited unmatched defensive consistency, recording a total of 104 tackles to lead the USFL. His impressive tally included seven or more tackles in nine out of ten games. In Week 6, Ginda equaled a modern USFL record when he achieved 18 tackles against the Birmingham Stallions, further solidifying his defensive prowess. With three interceptions, a sack, and an inspiring performance in the North Division Championship, Ginda ended the 2023 season on a high note.
While Thompson and Ginda receive their well-deserved accolades, the anticipation for the USFL’s 2023 Most Valuable Player and Sportsman of the Year awards grows. Both titles will be announced this Friday, adding further excitement to the buildup of the USFL Championship Game. The final showdown will see the North Division Champion Pittsburgh Maulers battling it out with the South Division Champion Birmingham Stallions for the 2023 title.
