New Jersey Generals Fortify Kicking Game Signing Nick Sciba

Nick Sciba provides the New Jersey Generals with some much-needed competition at kicker for the upcoming 2023 season in April. The team currently also has Houston kicker Caden Novikoff, who joined Jersey late in 2022.

  • Update: The New Jersey Generals have released kicker Caden Novikoff

The Generals had one of the league’s best special teams units in the USFL. Thanks to the play of NFL Pro Bowl returner KaVontae Turpin and returning standout punter Brock Miller. The kicking game, however, was a sore spot for New Jersey.

In 2022, the Generals were second to last in the USFL in field goal percentage at less than fifty percent. (10/21). Former NJ kickers Nick Rose (3/10) and Austin Jones (7/11) struggled to solidify the position in 2022. New Jersey’s kicking game also registered five missed extra points last season.

After setting an NCAA record in 2021 with 89.9% field goal accuracy and consecutive kicks made. Nick Sciba declared early for the NFL Draft. He finished his collegiate career connecting on 80 of 89 field goal attempts and also made all 193 of his extra-point attempts.

However, despite his success at Wake Forest, Sciba went undrafted in 2022 before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After being released by the Steelers during the summer, the all-time leading scorer with the Demon Deacons returned to Pittsburgh, replacing injured kicker Chris Boswell. Sciba made his NFL debut against the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles on October 30th, 2022, and connected on all three of his kicks, an extra point, including two field goals. Sciba would make his way temporarily onto the Steelers practice squad after Boswell returned from injury.

Sciba has worked with former long-time NFL kicker and coach/mentor Nick Novak to perfect his kicking technique. Sciba has been hard at work looking for a long-term spot in pro football.

He famously was working in a fish market before he answered the call perfectly for Pittsburgh. Such is the life of uncertainty for players on the pro football fringe. But the Generals certainly hope they have reeled in a solution at kicker with Nick Sciba.

Looks like a nice signing. Everyone likes the big leg, but nothing like consistency when you are deciding what to do on 4th down or for those crucial decisions down the stretch.
