The Memphis Showboats saw Three of their players earn NFL opportunities after the 2023 USFL season. Nehemiah Shelton, Daniel Helm, and Jordan Ferguson all took the plunge, and became Three of the One Hundred USFL players signed to NFL contracts over the past Two seasons.
Who Got Cut?
Jordan Ferguson and Daniel Helm found themselves taking to their head coaches on “cut day” for the NFL. Ferguson a 2023 rookie, was signed by the Seahawks and appeared in 3 preseason games totaling 9 tackles and a sack. Ironically while fighting for a practice squad opportunity, he was beat out by the Michigan Panthers Defensive Lineman Levi Bell. Helm came on strong with the Showboats in 2023, cementing himself as one of the USFL’s premiere Tight Ends. Helm spent 2023 training camp with the Detroit Lions appearing in three preseason games.
The Lone Showboat:
Nehemiah Shelton was the only member of the Memphis Showboats to stick around on the New York Jets Practice Squad. Shelton the Showboats 7th round draft pick in the 2023 USFL Draft appeared in three games for Memphis before departing to the NFL. Shelton, who is 2023 rookie, looks to be one of many 2023 UDFA’s who utilized the USFL to further their playing careers.
Closing Thoughts:
As the USFL progresses into its 3rd season, it’s extremely likely that not only members of the Memphis Showboats but all players throughout the 8 USFL teams will garner opportunities during the 2023 NFL season. With more opportunities continuing to present themselves to USFL players look for the league’s alumni to continue making an impact in 2023 and beyond in the NFL.
