The first two weeks have not been kind to the Pittsburgh Maulers who say two close games that ultimately left them winless going into week three. Here is what you need to know ahead of the week three showdown between the USFL’s two bottom teams.
To this point, both teams have stayed at the low end of the scoring spectrum. Panthers Head Coach Jeff Fischer must find a to put some points on the board if they want to stay competitive in the USFL. The Michigan Panthers have only scored a total of 16 offensive points through two games.
After an abysmal first week which saw the Maulers put up no passing yards in the first quarter of the first game, they bounced back in the second week due in large part to the arm strength of their Quarterback Josh Love who has a total of 357 passing yards in two starts.
This week looks to be the perfect week for the Maulers to capitalize on a weak offense. The first two weeks pit them against the best offensives in the league, this week the defense will be able to earn some confidence and hopefully show they can stop somebody.
On the offensive side of the ball, Josh Love has shown he has what it takes to take the starting position, and behind him, Maulers’ runningback Garret Groshek is currently third among running backs with 132 rushing yards on 34 carries.
If these two can get their games going it will open up the downfield options for Love to connect with Bailey Gaither who is the league leader in reception yards through two weeks.
USFL viewership has been higher than expected and fans are responding well to the games on social media. You can catch the game on FS1 Sunday, May 1st at 2:30 PM EST
