A “Last Chance U” star continues his career with the Showboats recent transaction late on September 30th. With USFL free agency looming the Memphis Showboats shored up their secondary with the signing of Delrick Abrams Jr for his 3rd season in the USFL and his 5th season in professional football.
Abrams came to prominence appearing in Netflix’s “Last Chance U” during his time at Independence Community College, before finishing up his collegiate career at the University of Colorado. Abrams would go undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft however signed Atlanta Falcons going on to appear in 3 games during the 2020 NFL season.
After what could have been considered a successful rookie season in 2020, Abrams was released by the Falcons at the conclusion of 2021 training camp, only to have a short stint with the LA Rams in December of 2021. Abrams would be selected in the USFL’s 2022 February draft with the 1st overall pick in the 8th Round enroute to becoming a stalwart in Todd Haley’s Defensive Backfield. In two seasons in the USFL Abrams has totaled 73 tackles for the Bandits/Showboats since the return of the USFL.
Currently the Showboats roster consists of 55 players amidst the impending merger of the XFL and USFL. While more details will follow upon the impending merger both leagues will continue to operate as separate entities for the foreseeable future. Last season the Showboats amassed a record of 5-5 missing the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season (1st season as Memphis), under Todd Haley’s leadership.
