With over 100 players being signed by NFL teams from the USFL since the league’s return in 2022, it’s become extremely apparent that the USFL has cemented itself as an optimal choice for players looking for an opportunity to showcase their skills with the hopes of earning an NFL opportunity. The Michigan Panthers were no exception as for a 2nd consecutive year, Michigan remained as one of the USFL’s top contributors in the USFL to NFL pipeline.
Who Was on the Chopping Block?
The Panthers saw Dashaun White, E.J. Perry, Frank Ginda, Breeland Speaks. Stevie Scott and Devin Ross earn opportunities to sign with NFL teams during the 2023 season. While most of the players mentioned above all had opportunities to showcase their skills during the preseason, Panthers fans got to see a quick glimpse of Devin Ross on the Las Vegas Raiders Practice Squad. Ross was in his second season with Michigan after spending several seasons in the NFL on and off practice squads, and a stint with in the XFL. He ended the season on injured reserve for Michigan.
Who Made the Cut?
The Panthers saw Levi Bell, Kaden Davis, Josh Butler, and D.J. Montgomery all land on practice squads at the end of the 2023 NFL training camp. In 2022, the Panthers saw players like Tino Ellis, T.J. Carter, and Lance Lenoir all see team on practice squads as alumni of the 2022 team. While Montgomery and Davis make their return to the NFL, Bell and Butler are getting their first taste at the “league”.
Closing Thoughts:
As the USFL progresses into its 3rd season, it’s extremely likely that not only members of the Michigan Panthers but all players throughout the 8 USFL teams will garner opportunities during the 2023 NFL season. With more opportunities continuing to present themselves to USFL players look for the league’s alumni to continue making an impact in 2023 and beyond in the NFL.
