Houston Gamblers Sign Two Cornerbacks to Roster

The Houston Gamblers bring in some support in the secondary with the signing of two cornerbacks to the roster.

It was announced late Tuesday afternoon that cornerbacks Richard Bowens III and Jai Nunn-Liddell agreed to contracts with the Gamblers.

Bowens started his college career playing for Iowa State for the first three seasons of his career playing in 16 total games. He would later transfer to Central Michigan starting in four of the 14 games played. His college career would end last season at Saginaw Valley State where he logged 20 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception in ten games played.

Nunn-Liddell began at Troy University in 2017 as he ended up transferring to Bowling Green where he played the 2018 season at. In nine games with the Falcons, he recorded one tackle for the team. He would end up playing for Kentucky State in 2022 recording ten tackles and an interception during the season. While he went undrafted, Nunn-Liddell did get a mini-camp workout with the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s been a relatively quiet offseason bringing in offensive lineman Jakari Robinson, kicker Gabe Brkic, and long snapper Logan Klusman. Four players on the team so far have been signed by NFL teams including Braylon Jones, Aaron Shampklin, Isaiah Zuber, and Josh Pederson. With the minimum loss of players on the roster, it leaves the team in pretty good shape so far for the 2024 season.

The focus on the secondary is not too much of a surprise as the Gamblers’ pass defense was ranked last allowing 205.3 passing yards per game. They’re the only defensive unit in the USFL to allow over 2,000 yards passing during the season. They also tied for last in the USFL in interceptions with five.

Houston needs to add more talent to the secondary and try to find guys who can create turnovers. The hope is Bowens and Nunn-Liddell will at least be able to help in that department.
