After the Showboats, did some alteration to their Quarterback and Special Teams room, the Showboats are seeing another Defensive Back leave the team. One of the Showboats more experienced leaders on the team Obi Melifonwu is now leaving the Showboats for the XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks per XFL Analyst. Melifnowu was recently removed from the Showboats roster on Fox Sports.
Melifonwu was a 2nd round pick by the Raiders in 2017 and has appeared in 7 NFL games totaling 10 tackles in his NFL career. He won a Super Bowl ring in 2018 with the New England Patriots, who signed with the team after being released by the Raiders due to an injury. Since 2020 after being released by the Patriots Melifonwu, bounced around with the 49ers and Eagles before getting drafted in 18th round of the 2022 USFL Draft by the then Tampa Bay Bandits. Melifonwu would total 17 Tackles with the Bandits in 2022, bouncing between the inactive roster, practice squad and active roster throughout the 2022 USFL season.
The Showboats go into 2023 dealing with the losses of Rannell Hall, Rashard Causey, Anthony Cioffi, Christian Campbell, and Quenton Meeks in addition to Melifonwu. The Showboats have been proactive during the offseason bringing Josh Nurse, Lamont Wade, and Troy Warner, however the Showboats do go into 2023 with a decent amount of uncertainty in the secondary. Currently the Showboats continue into the 2023 off-season with 61 players on their roster.
